Curiosities for the discerning

A quick assortment of oddments for you today involving Demon Possessed Dwarfs and Halflings, a Victorian era specialist in Mythobiology and a 21st century behemoth's trouble with chariots.

Quick roll of a D6… ok, Mythobiology gets to go first. First off, this isn’t strictly gaming related as it’s a book recommendation. However, I think this upcoming series will appeal to all those (myself included) VSF - with a dash of Steampunk - fans out there. The first novella, intriguingly called The End, launches the Diaries and Journals of Captain James Purcell series and starts with our protagonist James Purcell and his lovely fiancĂ© Eleanor being attacked by a creature after an evening at the theatre in 19th century Bristol. Eleanor is killed and life distinctly takes a turn for the worst for Mr. Purcell as he’s now the prime suspect in her murder and facing the gallows!

I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the author whilst attending a Spinward Fringe mini ‘TritonCon’ in Belfast, Norther Ireland on Sunday past and he kindly gave me a copy of The End - which I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

For a novella it fair packs in a fine yarn, introduces some engaging characters and wider plots and successfully left this reader wanting more. The upcoming first trilogy - Æther Shadow, Kitsune and Soul Fracture is one I’ll be watching for! I understand the author is also working on a game which I’ll report on as more information is made available. In the meantime, I can see some potential for a IHMN themed Captain James Purcell Company here. Interested? Pop over to the James Purcell website, blog or Amazon for a copy of The End.

Speaking of Amazon, they’ve rather curiously listed Faustus Furius, the tabletop chariot racing rules under ‘Favstvs Fvrivs’ so if you’re looking to purchase a copy of the full colour softback edition there (and very fine it is too!) you’ll have to use 'Favstvs Fvrivs' in the search engine! It certainly had me scratching my head. Alternatively, you can head over to the esteemed Ganesha Games establishment for all your chariot racing requirements! Which also lends to a nice Segway into…

…the latest Ganesha Kickstarter! This time its AXE and BRIMSTONE which aims to produce a new range of Demon Possessed Dwarfs and Halflings (28mm), a 3’x3’ gaming mat and the Axe and Brimstone five scenario narrative campaign supplement to support the very popular ADVANCED SONG of BLADES and HEROES core ruleset.

Indeed, as if I needed more Dwarfs! Actually, you can never have enough dwarf miniatures. It’s a fact. No arguing. And my reader knows I’m particularly keen on Songs of Blades campaigns so this Kickstarter has a bit of everything for me. A download of full colour ‘character cards’ will also be included, which I think is a very useful addition. I've often made up similar cards for both this system and others as a quick reference aid, especially for demonstrations. Full details on the Kickstarter site or click on the short video below.

That’s it for now. Next up will be Tezert’s dungeon part 2, the finale to the Frostgrave Diabolist’s Scheme campaign. Which will mean a trip down the hill to Wee Blokes HQ this evening…
